How is the trail organized and what can you expect?

The Canary Trail is a self-guided trail. That means you'll be doing the hike completely independently, but with everything you need in your pack. We take care of the practical side for you, so you can just focus on walking and enjoying.

Before your trip starts, you'll get access to our Travelbase App. In it, you'll find all the routes, highlights, and practical info. Each day includes clear descriptions, navigation, and tips to ensure you're well-prepared, even in changing conditions.

This is how your week will unfold

  • On the first day, you'll receive a detailed briefing from an experienced ranger
  • Throughout the week, you'll get a short daily briefing via message
  • You’ll hike independently on the accessible and balanced route we’ve mapped out for you
  • All accommodations in hotels are reserved for you in advance
  • You’ll receive prepared meals for breakfast and lunch, so you won't have to worry about bringing food (if you chose that option). For dinner, you can visit local restaurants nearby, and the ranger will provide recommendations for you.
  • If you have questions along the way or something goes wrong, you can always contact the ranger for assistance
When should I arrive?

On The Canary Trail, you always start hiking the day after your arrival. For example, if you book for the week of April 15 to 21, you'll arrive on April 15, and the first hiking day will be on April 16.

Our departure dates already include your arrival day and your departure day. You don't need to book extra days to complete the trail. If you want to explore Gran Canaria longer, that's of course always possible.

You can add an optional hotel stay in Maspalomas for your last night. In this example, it's the night of April 20 to 21.

You can add that extra night up to 2 months before departure, depending on availability.

Example week April 15 to 21

In the Travelbase App, you'll see this period as your full stay.

  • April 15: arrival in Gran Canaria
  • April 16: Maspalomas → San Bartolomé de Tirajana
  • April 17: San Bartolomé de Tirajana → Tejeda
  • April 18: Tejeda → Juncalillo
  • April 19: Juncalillo → Agaete
  • April 20: free day (with an optional extra night in Maspalomas)
  • April 21: departure from Maspalomas
What do the accommodations look like?

You’ll be sleeping for a week in a cozy bed in one of the carefully selected mountain huts or charming hotels along the trail. There are always sanitary facilities available.

Some days we offer double rooms with either a double bed or two separate beds. If you're alone or in a group of three, you'll be paired with other participants. We always try our best to place people of the same gender together, if possible.

Traveling solo?

If you register alone, you'll share a room with another participant in separate beds. We always do our best to group participants of the same gender together.

What about the meals and water during the trek?

During the trail, you'll occasionally come across a little bar where you can buy a refreshing drink or a snack. We offer a meal package for extra convenience, so you can truly discover the local dishes along the way.

The meal package includes a packed lunch for each walking day, prepared with care by the accommodations where we stay.

Breakfast is included in the base price.

We do recommend bringing along some snacks for the hike, so you have something to munch on during breaks.

Meal overview (subject to change)

  • Breakfast: often a typical European buffet
  • Packed lunch: 2 small sandwiches with filling (meat or veggie), a piece of fruit, a small bottle of water, a juice, and a cookie
  • Dinner: not included; at most accommodations you can eat on-site or at a nearby restaurant

We also offer a vegetarian option.

You can refill your water at the accommodation as needed.

Is there cellular reception during the trail?
  • During the trail, you usually have mobile coverage, although signal strength can vary depending on where you are. In some areas, mobile data may be weaker or even drop out completely, but you should still have at least a small signal to make calls if necessary. The signal might be weaker in narrow valleys, in certain parts of the laurel forest, and in more remote mountain areas. This is normal: reception can fluctuate from good 5G to a weaker signal and then come back a few minutes later. In the accommodations, you will always have mobile coverage, and there is also wifi available so you can easily stay reachable in the evenings.

    Practical Tips

    • Download the Travelbase app and/or the GPX files in advance so you can use the map offline
    • Let friends and family know that you usually only respond in the evenings, once you’ve arrived at the accommodation
    • Bring a power bank: GPS usage and taking photos can quickly drain your battery
What's included in the base price?
  • Detailed itinerary and complete organization of your stay
  • 5 nights in a comfortable accommodation at unique locations, including breakfast
  • Tourist tax
  • Shuttle transport to the start of the trail
  • Welcome and briefing by an experienced ranger
  • Complete packing list so you don't forget anything
  • Trail app for Canary Trail with all the necessary information
Can I add or remove options after my booking?

In most cases, you can still add extra options up to 1 month before departure, as long as there is availability. Try to decide about the extra night in the hotel as soon as possible.

Note: the cancellation insurance cannot be modified or removed after booking.

How does the payment work, and when do I need to pay the remaining amount?

Payment is made in two installments:

First, you have 5 days after registration to confirm your booking by paying a 30% deposit. If the deposit is not paid within those 5 days, your booking will be automatically canceled.

The remaining amount must be paid at least 60 days before departure.

You can find all payment details in your online profile. Each installment has its own payment instructions, so make sure to use the correct reference and bank details to avoid your transfer being rejected or refunded.

What should I bring for this trail?

Identification

Gran Canaria is part of Spain, so you don't need a passport. A valid ID card is sufficient.

Hiking Gear

Good hiking shoes are essential in Gran Canaria. Choose a pair that you feel comfortable in for multiple long hiking days. We recommend hiking shoes in category A/B to B/C with good ankle support, as some sections are steep, rocky, and uneven.

Before you leave, we will also provide you with a detailed packing list so you know exactly what to bring.

Can I leave extra luggage that I won't need during the trail behind?

If you have items that you don’t need during the hike, you can leave a small bag with our ranger on the morning of day 1. He/she will return it to you at the end of your trek in Gran Canaria.

What are the super flexible booking conditions and what are my options for cancellation?

These terms are available for anyone who books early. With this, you can change your trip for free to another week (if still available) or cancel with a 100% refund until June 1, 2026.

If you cancel after June 1, 2026, the regular cancellation policy applies.

What insurance options can I add?

During the booking process, you can add 2 types of insurance to your reservation.

Cancellation Insurance

Booked early? Then you might fall under our Superflex booking conditions. This allows you to change or cancel your reservation for free until June 1, 2026, no questions asked, with a full refund.

However, last-minute cancellations can always happen. If you want to be completely covered up to departure, you can add our cancellation insurance during booking for €69.

Travel Assistance Insurance

Want some extra peace of mind? Add our assistance insurance during booking. If something goes wrong on-site or you have an accident, this insurance can help you, for €49.

Can I get to know the other participants in advance?

About two weeks before departure, you'll get access to the group chat for your week in the Travelbase App, under "Messages." The ranger will share all the important practical info there, and you can meet the other participants and even start making plans for the trail.

How big is the group?

This is a self-guided trail, so you won't be walking in a fixed group with a guide. You set off at your own pace, with all the route information at hand.

If you'd like to walk together with other participants, that's usually possible. How much you connect and walk with others mainly depends on you and the group you're traveling with.

There is a maximum of 10 participants per departure date.

What is the climate like in Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria has a subtropical climate with usually mild winters and warm, sunny days. In November, temperatures are generally quite pleasant, often around 24 °C during the day along the coast and in lower areas.

Keep in mind that the weather can vary greatly by region. In the mountains, it can cool down quickly, especially after sunset. At higher altitudes, 5 to 10 °C in the evening is definitely possible, and wind can make it feel even cooler.

So be sure to bring layers and something warm for the evening to stay comfortable during cooler nights and sudden weather changes.

Can I skip a walking day or finish early if needed?

Yes, you can definitely do that on The Canary Trail, and it's usually quite easy to arrange.

If you decide to not hike for a whole day or to stop earlier, you can generally get to any endpoint easily by car, so you can also take a taxi. Just keep in mind that a taxi or extra transport is not included and you will need to pay for it yourself.

During some parts of the hike, you may be more remote, which means it’s not always possible to call a car immediately. In that case, it's best to walk to a reachable spot or to the end point of the stage.

If something happens or you have doubts along the way, you can always check in with the ranger for the safest and most realistic solution.

Is this trail suitable for people with a fear of heights?

Yes, in most cases, it is. The Canary Trail has no sections where you walk right along cliffs, and the paths are generally quite wide.

Of course, you might experience some elevation changes or have views over valleys in Gran Canaria, but there are no narrow, exposed passages. If you have mild to moderate fear of heights, this trail is usually manageable.

Can I bring my dog?

Unfortunately not. For safety reasons, dogs are not allowed on this trail. The Canary Trail includes steep sections, significant elevation changes, and challenging terrain, making it unsuitable for a dog.
